Jim Williams,#15: Those 16 mm pots are rated at 15 k rotations, maybe they are past that. The last step to recover them is
an ultrasonic wash. Once cleaned, you need to re-lube the pot shafts or they will seaze. I have seen hopelessly scratchy pots come back clean after that.
Jim Williams,#6,13: Anything that leaves a residue will also pick up more dirt. I recommend washing out the Caig with a non residue contact cleaner after treatment.
The lube was for
pot shafts that may need re-lubing due to severe washing, like an ultrasonic bath.
Common small Alps and larger Shadow styles used in consoles have no lube insides. I found if stabilant 22A is injected, anything other than a couple mils of coating will become non conductive and the stabilant will become gummy after a few years.
Jim Williams,#4: For those with more time on their hands, a small ultrasonic jewery cleaner is also a great way to deep clean them but that would require removing all of them first. Brent Averil also has
a large tank that will fit an entire console strip and he has done deep ultrasonic cleanings for me. It does bring back the dead
but requires a re-lube of the pot shafts.
Jim Williams,#10: Brent Averil used to offer that service,
he had a narrow, long tank that fit recording console modules, worked magic on shot pots and switches. You do need to know what you're doing and
a re-lube process is required. If you don't know, you will hurt things.
Jim Williams,#26,29: I've used all of this crap in the last 30+ years. Crap it all is. Nothing replaces a worn switch or pot like a new one. These chemicals are temporary solutions waiting to fail, again. Anything that leaves a residue like Caig or Stabilant 22 will attract dirt and fail.
De-oxit was the only thing that restored a switch on one of Stevie Wonder's clavinets. That was last summer. Now it's a mess and I have to try and restore it, again.
